Families & Schools Together, Inc. Receives Generous Grant to Expand the FAST® Program in San Antonio, Texas

June 3, 2016 – Madison, WI – Families & Schools Together, Inc. received a generous grant in the amount of $82,700 from the Humana Foundation to expand FAST®, the evidence-based parent engagement program, to two new elementary schools, in partnership with Family Service Association of San Antonio, Inc. in San Antonio, Texas.

“We are very appreciative of and excited by the opportunity provided to us by the Humana Foundation to expand FAST in the San Antonio community,” said Carol Goedken, CEO and Executive Director of Families &Schools Together, Inc. “Family Service has been a long time partner of ours, and we are so excited to collaborate with them to empower families to build a stronger, more healthful community in San Antonio.”

This initiative seeks to increase families’ knowledge and awareness of healthy options and to practice engaging in effective parenting methods and cooking nutritiously. In forging new relationships, families will gain social capital, and with that, decreased stress, increased resiliency, improved norms regarding healthy eating/exercise, and the building of protective factors related to positive parent-child interactions. Social capital allows parents to access resources like, health services, nutrition assistance programs and affordable exercise activities for children.

“Family Service’s mission is empowering individuals and families to transform their lives and strengthen their community,” said Nancy Hard, President and CEO. “We recognize the negative effects of obesity on children’s physical, cognitive, emotional and social development. We believe that policy changes and family engagement are among the most powerful ways to change behaviors and practices of children, parents and communities. In our early childhood education programs, we are currently implementing best practices to increase physical activity and improve nutrition, and look forward to the opportunity to do the same with the FAST curriculum.”

Humana Foundation’s investment will be used to fund this project at two elementary schools in San Antonio, Texas. With high rates of obesity and diabetes, there is a need for wrap-around, supportive services to help cultivate healthy behaviors in families and the community.
